About Southern Yellow Pine

One part of Campus LKR’s path system is called the LKR path (Sections A to F on the map). Along the LKR path, six sections have been planted with the most common species of tree used in the production of the VKR Group’s windows and doors.

D: Southern Yellow Pine/Pitch Pine

[Pinus Palustr is], [Pinus rigida]

Growth region: common in the southern United States.

In 1990-91, this timber replaced Douglas fir in production at VELUX Greenwood. Southern yellow pine is the collective name for several related species. Southern yellow pine can present certain challenges in its processing for production of window profiles and, after some years, it became clear that it would make more sense to switch to Ponderosa pine. It is very unusual to plant Southern yellow pine species in Denmark and the specimens in the LKR path are possibly the only ones in the country.
