MARITIME PINE
One section of Campus LKR’s path system is called the LKR Path (Sections A to F on the map). Along this path, six sections have been planted with the most common tree species used in the production of VKR Group’s windows and doors.
ABOUT MARITIME PINE
Maritime Pine (Pin des Landes)
[Pinus Pinaster]
Growth Region: Common in the province of Gascony, south of Bordeaux.
This particular type of pine is somewhat of a French VELUX specialty, having been used in some production at VKR France since the 1990s. It is uncommon to use Maritime pine (Pin des Landes) in windows, and due to the difficulty of sourcing timber of the right quality, special agreements must be made with local sawmills to ensure cooperation.
Maritime pine has a deep historical connection to the large-scale planting programs in the dune and marshland areas of the Landes Forest, southwest of Bordeaux. These extensive plantations began in 1787 under the direction of engineer Nicolas Brémontier. However, it was the legislation introduced by Emperor Napoleon III on June 19, 1857, that mandated large-scale reforestation efforts in the municipalities of Gascony. This initiative aimed to improve soil conditions and protect against coastal erosion.
Today, the Landes Forest spans over 10,000 km², making it the largest man-made forest in Europe.
