DAYLIGHT PAVILION

ABOUT DAYLIGHT PAVILION

Daylight Pavilion stands at the heart of Campus LKR. It is five meters high and eight meters in diameter. The sculpture, made of stainless steel, features bands of coloured glass in all the hues of the rainbow. It is the work of the internationally renowned Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. Daylight Pavilion was unveiled on December 21, 2007.

The concept of Daylight Pavilion is based on calculations of the sun’s path across the sky above Campus LKR throughout the year. Its inclination and location precisely align with the position of the rising sun at dawn in this area.

The colored glass reflects the hours of daylight at different times of the year. The pieces on the bottom band indicate the number of daylight hours at the winter solstice, while the top band represents the daylight hours at the summer solstice.

The width of each band illustrates the variation in daylight hours throughout the year. The most significant increase and decrease occur around the equinoxes in March and September, whereas the change is minimal around the solstices in June and December.
